“I’ve been drunk for about a week now, and I thought it might sober me up to sit in a library.”
One of my favorite auteur filmmakers is currently creating his adaptation of the best book I was ever forced to read in high school. I seriously can’t wait for Baz Luhrmann’s version of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s preppy masterpiece, The Great Gatsby, which is scheduled to premiere this coming December. I always felt that the old movie version with Robert Redford and Mia Farrow was good, but didn’t quite capture the energy and decadence that I imaged at Gatsby’s roaring parties. If anyone can get it right, it seems like the guy who created Moulin Rouge is a good bet.
A few photos from the production have been released and they’re pretty terrific. My expectations are high for this: I predict an explosion of style and fantasy with a kick-ass soundtrack to boot. The kind of movie that inspires parties for years to come. And with Leonardo DiCaprio and Tobey Maguire set to play Jay Gatsby and Nick Carraway, we’re probably in for some strong performances as well. Daisy “her voice was full of money” Buchanan will be played by Carey Mulligan. She did, after all, already have the right haircut.
Oh, and did I mention that the movie is being filmed in 3D? While I’m a bit nervous about the omnipresent eyes of Dr. T.J Eckeleburg hovering right in front of me, I can’t wait to experience a real Gatsby party in three dimensions at the Alamo South Lamar. And yes, I will probably be wearing a costume.
